Small speakers pack some punch

Weighing in at a mere 6 lbs each, Audioengine presents their latest Premium Passive Bookshelf Speakers, the AP4.

With a sensitivity of 88 dB, a claimed frequency response of 58Hz-22kHz, the new AP4 makes up for in specs what it may lack in size.

All the info after the jump...

Audioengine P4Made to use in conjunction with other receivers or amps, the AP4 is an accessory in sound to your home theater or stereo system.

"The AP4's work great with Class D desktop amplifiers, stereo receivers and tube amplifiers," according to Audioengine co-founder Dave Evans.

"The goal was to design a small but powerful bookshelf speaker for people that already have receivers or amps and are looking for the same Audioengine sound and quality in a passive loudspeaker."

The AP4 passive speakers are full-sounding bookshelf speakers in a small satellite size package.

They are a 2-way front ported design (crossed over at 2.8 kHz), with a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter and 4-inch Kevlar woofer contained within magnetically shielded, hand-built and custom-finished cabinets.

The AP4's compact size can offer versatility in room placement: The speakers can be seated on stands, on a bookshelf, or mounted on a wall using the integrated threaded inserts.

The AP4 comes with finishing options in: Satin Black, Hi-Gloss White, and Solid Carbonized Bamboo.

P4: $249/pair

Comments

I just compared the Black MDF to the Bamboo version AP4 (AP4B and AP4N) for a while, powering them with a Headroom desktop stereo power amp (Icepower 50Wx2). Both versions sound great, but the Bamboo is a clear cut above in terms of low-mid clarity and definition and overall tonal balance. I guess the Bamboo just sounds more "musical" to the point it almost sounds like a different- and noticeably better- loudspeaker. Definitely a keeper. Sounds tasty nearfield on monitor stands and out in the room. Low-end roll-off allows seemless integration with 8" sub.
