Ah, the good life. What could be more delicious than to dine, recline, soak, swim and entertain alfresco beneath the twinkling heavens? Add to that a first-rate audio system, dramatic landscape lighting, an outdoor kitchen, cool cocktails, a sexy infinity edge pool and a cabana with a plasma television and surround sound—all controlled with a touchscreen remote—and you will never want to step foot out of the backyard.

A luxurious outdoor setting outfitted with the finest creature comforts, and wired for sound and video, is what the well-heeled are demanding from custom installers these days. Now more than ever, outdoor living rooms, cabanas and lanais are finding their way into the landscape architect’s plans, and are complemented by audio and video setups that are equally as luxurious as those that are used and enjoyed in indoor settings.

With the Clark Synthesis AQ339 Aquasonic speaker, the music never stops ... even underwater. The AQ339 uses special sound transducers—one mounted above the water, one suspended below. A cable tethers the floating apparatus to your audio system.  (Click image to enlarge)

A case in point is the Los Angeles–area lanai owned by Larry Guerra and masterminded by interior designer Susan Cohen of Susan Cohen Associates Inc. of Santa Monica, Calif. The outdoor theater, installed by Joe Cali of  Theater Design Associates, is in total design sync with the 1920s Art Deco home and makes the most of the views of the Angeles National Forest.
