When Overbuilt is Just Right

Cary Audio's new CD 303T SACD Professional Version is overbuilt in all the ways audiophiles are looking for. High-end DACs, super-ridged chassis, and of course... vacuum tubes.

The chassis of the 303T is split into three sections; one for the power supply, one for the digital parts and transport, and one for the analog stage.

Four 12AU7 tubes are the highlight of the analog stage. Cary even recommends experimenting with different brands of tubes for subtle changes to the sound.

On the digital side of things there are four BurrBrown 1792u DACs run in a balanced parallel setup. Cary claims that the master clock jitter is below measurable levels thanks to a digital buffer circuit. They describe the process as the digital bits are read off the disc, stored in RAM, and then sent to the DAC.

When it comes to regular CDs, the CD 303T Professional will up-sample to 96, 192, 384, 512 or even a near-crazy 768 kHz.
