Pop a Wheelie

We like people who think outside the box—especially when displaying boxy flat-screen TVs.

Other than mounting it on a wall, plopping it on top of a boxy cabinet, or cramming it into a traditional entertainment unit, what’s a TV-loving, design-savvy homeowner to do?

One designer has a unique idea...

Horgan Becket, a Brooklyn-based architecture and design firm, has created its own TV stand for that exact reason.

“The solutions for flat-screens are lacking in how they deal with the space around them,” says partner Greg Horgan. “The design and details of the cart are open and honest, and it engages the space around the TV. It’s not just about the flat-screen.”

Horgan Becket uses cast iron instead of the predictable wood veneer as the main material; the component platforms are a silvery-white, translucent acrylic. An unexpected swirl with a small display platform explodes out of the cart’s left side. “It adds warmth to the iron,” Horgan says.

“It’s a little display. You can personalize it with an object and make it yours.” Horgan embellished his cart with a decorative bird.

The wheels allow the 200-lb. cart to fly around the room for prime viewing and maintenance needs. “The wheels create a sense of movement and playfulness,” Horgan says.
