When's the last time someone looked at your remote control and said, "Yowza! That's a saucy looking remote control"?
Yeah, me neither. And I'm not looking for it to happen anytime soon. At least not until this spring.
That's when RTI plans to release its new ST-7 Universal Controller -- a sleek two-way remote that boasts a 7-inch capacitive multitouch screen. Yeah, like the iPhone. But bigger.
The ST-7 also features 13 programmable hard buttons and a handy dandy little Blackberry-style trackball with customizable backlight coloring. It also sports stereo speakers and a microphone for two-way intercom communication.
You can spring for several optional docks -- including a wall dock, as well as wireless and wired tabletop stands, all of which feature a smart electronic locking system -- but what caught my eye was the sturdy kickstand on the back of the remote. Sometimes it's the little things.
Unfortunately, pictures don't really do the thing justice. Its piano black gloss finish and simple, elegant lines combine to create a smart-looking controller that I really just didn't want to put back in its dock.
The ST-7 should hit the market in the spring of 2010 for right around $1800.

RTI's new ST-7 remote (if that's what you want to call it) continues the trend they have been setting for sleek design and ergonics that they started when they launched the T2-C. I own a T-4 in my own Theater Room and for some reason or other do not sell as many RTI T-4 panels as the rest of the line. I think that is going to change when this controller hits the market Q1 of 2010. Not only can it be cradled and held in your lap, but it can mount into an inwall crade. Very cool. It's good to see that RTI is getting a new flagship controller.
