A painstaking interior renovation combines with whole-house automation and a/v systems to redefine an 1853 Georgetown brownstone for the 21st century.

Lured by the urban lifestyle of Georgetown, a married couple fell in love with this majestic home in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s historic district. The stately 1853 brick-row house offered three floors of living space that, while nicely proportioned, were slightly outmoded. The owners decided to transform the 10,000-square-foot residence with an extensive interior renovation to change it from dated to dynamic.

The kitchen and family room are designed to be one flowing space.

“The owners envisioned a plan that was contemporary and elegant, yet still in tune with the building’s heritage,” says architect Anthony Barnes of Barnes Vanze Architects Inc. of Washington, DC, whose firm handled the structural architecture and interior detailing. “We reintroduced identity to the home, [which was] lost over the years, and collaborated with the owners to redefine the interiors with a classic European approach of juxtaposing old and refined with contemporary and rustic.”

Having tackled numerous renovation projects in the past, the homeowners understood the importance of assembling a solid design team. In addition to Barnes, they enlisted interior designer Therese Baron-Gurney of Baron Gurney Interiors of Washington, DC, and custom sales and design manager Mark Tabor of custom installation firm Gramophone in Columbia, Md.

“The architect-designer dialogue is essential in building a high level of quality in any project, but this project’s complexity and precision required close cooperation among all of the design team.”

The catalyst for the interior renovation was the staircase’s redesign: The husband requested a more gentle-looking staircase.

“Taking out the stairs was like ripping out the lungs,” Barnes says, adding that the removal resulted in a floor-plan reshuffle and wood floor restoration on all three levels.
