Now with more Yellow!

Stepping out from behind the age old RGB (red, green, blue) method of creating an image, on several of Sharp’s new LCDs they’ll be adding a yellow sub-pixel in addition to the red, green and blue ones.

Sharp claims the addition of a yellow sub-pixel will make some colors (like, shocker, yellow) more lifelike. Indeed, from the demos they were showing, the yellow really popped. Sadly, this means little as demos can be tweaked to look pretty much any way you want.

The idea of adding a yellow pixel certainly isn’t a bad one, but what has to be kept in mind is that the original source material is only RGB, so any “yellow” data has to be created by the TV. Does it work? We’ll have to wait to get a review sample to see.

Other features of the new top of the line LE920 sets include LED edge lighting, a new version of AQUOS Net that includes streaming from Netflix, 240 Hz, and a depth of 1.6 inches. Sizes include 52, 60, and 68, all available this spring.
