LCD+PS3=CELL TV

Probably Toshiba’s biggest announcement was the long rumored and discussed CELL TV.

Though presented as the “Toshiba Developed” CELL Processor, it is indeed the same CELL that is found in the PS3, and several IBM products (all joint developers). What can a processor like that do in your TV? Find out after the jump.

Well, really, what can’t a processor like that do in your TV? The most obvious is more advanced scaling/processing for lower resolution signals, like SD TV and internet video. Toshiba is claiming it will make all SD indistinguishable from HD, which is hyperbole at best. You also get 2D to 3Di processing, video phone capabilities, Vudu and Netflix streaming, a 1 terabyte hard drive, Wi-Fi and a built in BD player.

The biggest visual impact will come from a 512 zone local dimming LED backlight which is sure to be impressive.

While listed at 480 Hz, the CELL TV is actual 240 Hz with a scanning backlight.

No info on pricing yet, or availability past “2010.” A similar model was launched in Japan, and it cost more than my car.
