To help companies meet state recycling requirements, Panasonic, Sharp, and Toshiba have formed the Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Company, LLC (MRM).
With its mission to “bring electronics manufacturers and electronics recyclers together into long-term relationships that provide convenient recycling opportunities to consumers, MRM’s long-term goal is sustainable electronic product recycling.”
MRM is a joint venture designed to manage the collection and recycling of electronics in the United States. It is designed to assist manufacturers in meeting the compliance requirements of the 16 recently enacted state recycling laws, many of which will come into effect in 2009 and 2010.
The company began initial operations in Minnesota in September 2007 to manage collection and recycling programs in the U.S. The MRM website is built around a copyrighted compliance calendar. It offers manufacturers an overview of registration, reporting and collection program requirements organized by date and state.
The program is off to a strong start in Minnesota, serving 75 permanent drop-off points spread across the state, remaining the only manufacturer organization to provide a comprehensive, statewide program.
MRM also supports the recycling needs of 21 manufacturers, totaling more than 10 million pounds of discarded electronics per year in Minnesota. MRM is in the process of developing collection and recycling programs in other states and including Connecticut, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia and jurisdictions, including New York City.
