Got HD Moxi?

From Digeo, a Paul Allen-backed company, Moxi’s new HD DVR aims to provide a superior HD DVR experience for cable customers who have little choice when selecting an HD DVR from their cable provider.

The ubiquitous Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 is the most often supplied unit, and its paltry 160 GB hard drive is only good for about 20 hours of HD recording, although most are equipped with a port for an external hard drive to up the recording capacity).

With a 500 GB hard drive, the Moxi HD DVR is good for about 75 hours of HD recording, and includes dual tuners and Multi-stream CableCard support for encrypted premium channels and video-on-demand.

The Moxi features an E-SATA port for an expansion external hard drive, and will support up to two additional gigabytes of external storage, upping the total HD hours of recording capacity to about 375, which should be enough for even the most die-hard couch potato.

The Moxi on-screen user interface is the defining differentiation here, with an HD-based 16:9 OSD, and quarter screen HD PIP on at all times when browsing the channel guide.

The most likely competitor to the new Moxi is Tivo’s HD XL DVR, which carries a lower retail price ($599) compared to the Moxi’s $799 SRP, but Tivo charges either a monthly fee or a one-time lifetime fee for the program guide, which Moxi includes at no extra charge.
