URC R50

No PC Required

The common thread among programmable remote controls is that above a certain level of complexity, you need to use a computer to set up the remote.

Not so with the new R50 from Universal Remote Control. The R50 is the top of the line consumer model from URC, and it's list of features doesn't end with just a "not-that-into-you" attitude with computers.

Programming for the potential 18 components is all done on the full-color 2-inch LCD screen. To make this seemingly daunting task simple, no manual is required. An on-screen wizard leads users through programming step by step.

Codes for the millions of potential products out there, normally something that needs to be downloaded, are all built into the R50. If by chance you have a product that isn't stored on board, the R50 is also a learning remote. Down the road, if you have a bunch of new components, you can plug the R50 into a computer via USB and download new codes.

Each device is allowed eight pages of six custom buttons. The buttons and the screen use LED backlighting.

The R50 takes 4 AA batteries, and has power saving features to prolong battery life like a "Sofa Mode" that senses if the remote is being squished between cushions and is having the batteries drained down needlessly.

The R50 is available this month.
