iRetro
Twenty-first century high-tech meets early twentieth century low-tech in the iVictrola, as stylish an iPhone accessory as you’ll ever see.
Inspiration for this completely unpowered horn amplifier struck when designer Matt Richmond stumbled upon an old Magnavox speaker horn in an antique store and was immediately drawn to the shape.
“I had often wished that the speaker on my iPhone was a bit louder,” he says, “and I immediately tried holding the phone to the mouth of the horn. Even without a tight seal, the horn improved the volume and clarity of the iPhone immensely, so I bought it and designed the dock.”
An early, limited-edition version of the iVictrola quickly sold out at $425 a pop on the Design Within Reach website this past Christmas, but Richmond is ramping up production on new models now.
Prices vary depending on materials, and whether or not you provide your own antique horn.
“Scarcity of the antique horns is a limiting factor,” Richmond says. “They're expensive and hard to find. I hope to offer two versions soon: one with the antique horn and one with a newly manufactured horn.”
