Unlike ergonomics, which deals with how the human body interacts with physical objects, "human factors" focus on the psychological aspects of how humans interact with physical objects. Chesler points to the simple act of a "screen swipe" as an example. In 2006-prior to the first iPhone launch in 2007-no one knew what a screen swipe was or could do. Today, the masses expect to receive a specific outcome from a swipe.

http://www.hemagazine.com/node/22069#comments Home Automation & Remotes Tue, 09 Nov 2010 17:10:44 -0800 MarkE 22069 at http://www.hemagazine.com Kaleidescape’s New Interface is Child’s Play http://www.hemagazine.com/node/22061
Toddlers Can Find and Play Their Own Movies,
Parents Have Complete Control over Available Content

We know that today's youngsters take to technology as second nature. Nothing can make you feel so brainless as watching your eight year-old install and test an iPad app in the wink of an eye while you're still struggling to get onto the app marketplace site. So it's no surprise that the well-known movie-and-music server manufacturer, Kaleidescape, Inc., has recently introduced the industry's first user interface designed specifically for young children. With a Kaleidescape System and a Kaleidescape Child Remote, a young child can find and play any of his or her movies without help from an adult. The way it works-different user interface behavior when using a particular remote-is an industry first. Kaleidescape Systems connected to the Internet have recently begun to receive this software update.

When a Child Remote is used with a Kaleidescape System, the on-screen user interface automatically changes to the simplified child user interface, which only offers pure graphical navigation of movie covers. The Child Remote has nine buttons, a) up, down, left, right and select, b) play, pause and stop, and c) shuffle. Parents choose what content is in the child's personal collection of movies. The rest of the content is hidden. When any other controller is used, the user interface changes back to the original on-screen user interface.

"With a complicated touch panel controller and more than 1,000 movies loaded on our system, my four-year-old daughter used to always ask for help when she wanted to watch a movie," said Michael Malcolm, Kaleidescape's founder, chairman and CEO. "The day she got her own remote and her own collection of movies, she was thrilled. Now, she won't let us start a movie for her; she insists on doing it herself." The new child user interface also gives parents a way to add educational programs into the mix and encourage young children to discover good content independently within their personal collection.

Kaleidescape Child Remote MSRP $39 in the United States.

For more information, visit

http://www.hemagazine.com/node/22061#comments Home Automation & Remotes News Mon, 08 Nov 2010 07:32:33 -0800 MarkE 22061 at http://www.hemagazine.com
